September brings a new Island Batik Blog Hop! Imagine this: 25 amazing Ambassadors, each assigned with a latest Island Batik collection, and a single mission – to create an intricate paper pieced quilt. Can you feel the gentle anticipation in every stitch? Paper Piecing is a technique that offers endless design possibilities, so we’re all gathered here eagerly awaiting all the imaginative ideas and stunning quilts the participants of the Hop will bring to life! So, settle in with a comforting cup of tea, nestle into your coziest chair, and let’s embark on this quilting journey together.

The requirements of the Blog Hop are simple: use one of the paper piecing techniques and as many fabrics in the assigned Island Batik collection as possible to create an eye-catching paper pieced showstopper!

We hope that seeing all of the wonderful quilts that we will share in the next 3 weeks will inspire you to make something great. If you’re new to Island Batik Blog Hops, there will be a total of THREE giveaways where you get a chance to win a Fat Quarter bundle of a collection featured during the event – the first is live right now and you can find it at the bottom of this post! I wish someone had told me that it isn’t a race, to take my time and enjoy the process

Lovely fabrics! Batiks are such great fabrics to work with – wish I had found them earlier when I started quilting! ( measure twice cut once!)

Yes, It doesn’t have to be perfect to be loved.

Use your best fabrics first! It’s much more fun.

I wish someone had told me how helpful a walking foot would be.

The one thing I wished had been stressed more when learning to quilt was the importance of accurate seams. It can make a whole quilt or block off and not fit as it should.

What a “scant” quarter inch seam is and why you use it.

Accurate cutting makes for a better block. Square up your block when finished.

When I started, I didn’t know about creating “half-square” triangle blocks, so I would cut out triangles and have to sew on bias edges, which could stretch!

just enjoy making your quilt and don’t stress over perfection – although perfection makes everything fit together right!

I grew up in 2 worlds, the perfect world and the get it done world. 2 very different Grandmothers. I wish someone had told me to ignore the Quilt Police and live in the get it done world. That said. Try to get better at one thing each 6 month time period. Works for me.

I wish I had known to change my rotary cutter blade more often! And my sewing machine needle. It’s amazing how much my accuracy improves/my frustration decreases when I do these things.

These look so pretty, I wish someone would’ve told me that you don’t have to have a plain boring back on a quilt and that you can make it as pretty as the front!

To just enjoy the process and not worry about perfection.

One was the type of fabric used. When I first started I was told to just go and get what ever fabric I liked. Well I had lots of “likes”. Some of them would make nice winter heavy quilts. Some fabrics just stretched all over the place, not making a nice quilt at all. Second was to not be a perfectionist. Ugghh that right there cause a lot of problems for many years. If I was going to give the quilt away, it had to be perfect. Soon I learned that there is no such thing as “perfect” and those little “oppsies” that I saw, no one else seemed to see. Hmmmm This was cool.

Enjoy the process. Don’t stress over it

I wish I’d been told “better finished than perfect” when I started quilting, it would have saved me so much time spent with my seam ripper and feeling discouraged.

Well, that you only need a 1/4” seam allowance! I came from making clothes, and made my first quilt with a 5/8” seam allowance!!!

I wish I had perhaps been urged to use that fabric that I loved right then while I truly loved it! I’ve fallen out of love with too many of the fabrics I first bought and here they are, still on my shelves.

Learn a scant quarter inch and how to pin baste through all the layers.

Join a group! Don’t be intimidated by the expertise of others, we all started at one point. You will gain a lot of knowledge and make wonderful friends.

No one told me it would make me a Fabriholic!!!! I have so many fabrics, kits, patterns …. I could open a shop!!!

I wish someone had told me it’s okay to make mistakes. I was often too afraid to try new things because they looked hard and I was afraid to mess up. Now I know mistakes happen and you fix it and move on. I love batik fabrics and thank you for making so many amazing designs!

I wish someone had told me how sweet and kind the sewing community was. When u first started I struggled so much figuring out my machine and the basics and was too intimidated to ask for help, but now I’m so excited to help anyone new to sewing and roping people into my hobby 😁

I wish someone had told me the importance of trimming individual units to size when making blocks.

Buy the best rulers and rotary cutters you can get. They make a big difference in your cutting. And also that if you use batiks, you will fall in love with all the variations of colors.

I wish someone would have told me how important a 1/4″ seam is. My first quilt I just used the edge of the presser foot and my sizes were all off! I’ve learned my lesson.

I did not know that fabric styles changed yearly. I bought LOTS of fabric when I first started quilting, It is hard to blend the different styles into a quilt when trying to use up stash.

Take your time and give yourself grace!
