Meet Island Batik Ambassador Mania Hatziioannidi!

Please, say hi to the talented Mania Hatziioannidi from Athens, Greece, who has been an Island Batik Brand Ambassador for 2 years. Mania isn’t just a beautiful Greek name, it also says a lot about her passion for quilting!

Mania started quilting when she was 49, and it was love at first sight! Although she never liked sewing, she has been enjoying knitting and crocheting from the age of 6.  When she saw a bag made with hexagons, she was so amazed that she said to herself, “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life!” Funnily enough, Mania doesn’t like hexagons now!

Quilt was made for the 2019 Island Batik Ambassador March challenge, Vintage Reimagined. Mania used the Icicle collection, designed for Tamarinis by Kathy Engle, batting by Hobbs and Aurifil thread. In 2009, Mania took a series of her first quilting lessons in Greece, but back then, little was known about this craft. Since then, she has learned a lot and now she is a founder of Hellenic Quilting Guild and a quilting instructor, spending 12 hours a day doing what she loves the most – teaching and quilting!

Mania is a modern quilter and loves bringing embroidery into her projects. She is also very fond of piecing, which allows the design unfold bit by bit, and makes the procedure so much fun for her! Although appliqué is not Mania’s cup of tea, she likes making appliquéd quilts with a combination of other techniques, so that she doesn’t get bored. Thanks to the monthly Island Batik Ambassador challenges, she always gets an opportunity to try a little bit of everything and learn new tricks!

Mania loves blues, turquoises and purples, but she believes that every color has its place in a quilt and tries to incorporate other colors into her projects as well. When working on monthly Ambassador projects, the theme of the quilt might asks for specific colors and it makes the job so much easier!

Quilt was made for the 2019 September Island Batik challenge, Child’s Play. Mania used Batik Foundations fabrics, AccuQuilt cutting die and batting by Hobbs. To see the full post, please visit:
