Sustainability plays somewhat of a role in my sewing. I still buy new fabric, but I also use every last bit of what I buy. Even tiny trimmings and loose threads make their way into art quilts. Thanks for this beautiful blog hop!

I like a firm stable base for my bags.

Great question! I save everything for scraptastic quilts. I rarely take a bag for purchases also. The thought of throwing even a miniscule piece of fabric makes me shiver.

I am trying to be a good girl by using my stash first, before buying anything. I am also trying to finish my 50 UFOs. I have pulled out a few of them, and have been working towards the finish. They might not get done this year, but they are farther along! I always bought a little more fabric when starting a quilt, so I usually have enough large scraps left to make a second quilt. I use smaller scraps for applique, thin strips to tie bundles, teenie scraps for stuffing.

I like to make handmade gifts that will last. I limit buying gifts that will be used for only a short time. Also, given the high cost of fabric, I save and use scraps.

I save every little scrap and use them to make beautiful scrappy quilts. I love making sampler blocks with them and star blocks.

I really try to use up all my fabric in small projects. I’ve made rugs, potholders, bowl cozies, baskets, totebags, pillows, etc. I use leftovers from t-shirt quilts to make dusting cloths or cut up for dog beds. I go through my fabric annually and give away what hasn’t been touched or no longer interests me (harder to do than it sounds).

I appreciate cotton fabric. Is it sustainable? I think so since I see it planted in fields near me.

Sustainability should get more room and awareness. To produce fabric consumes a lot of water, electricity and nature. So – first I keep and use my scraps. And I buy at flee markets clothes or uses the one we have and don’t use any more. Jeans or nice dresses from wonderful fabrics – or I use the good business shirts from my hubby, no longer needed – and take it for the inside parts of zipper pouches or bags. If I do not like a fabric I give it away – sharing with friends.
Jeans are a good base for a lot of projects.

I save my scraps and I use every scrap I can in my projects. I also mend old clothes when I can.

Great question. I am careful to not wast fabric and supplies, and use left-over blocks and pieces in small projects, like mug rugs, etc. I sew smaller batting pieces together and use them for charity quilts and pet beds. If I find something in my studio I no longer want or can’t use, I’ll donate it to the share table at my guild.

Using scraps to make sure I don’t waste fabric.

I try to throw less and less out….so I now make dog beds or take scraps to the textile recycling in our town. That makes me feel good as there is a lot of waste when machine quilting a quilt from extra batting that is too small for anything. I do have a lot of scraps, and am not a scrap quilter, but am really committing to using them up sooner rather than later.

I am a BIG scrap user! I have followed Bonnie Hunter’s techniques for cutting, storing, and USING my scraps!

I am very conscious about using up all my fabric scraps or passing them onto to someone who can use them. Small bags and pouches are a great way to use up scraps and make gifts at the same time.

Sustainability is important to me. I love using my fabric scraps to make projects once the main project is complete. Cloth napkins are easy to make and save on paper, and gifting handmade items is often preferrrable to fancier short-lived gifts. Thank you for the great batik collections and the awesome blog hop.

Sustainability is playing a bigger and bigger role for me. I am using my stash instead of buying as much (so hard!) and the fabric I don’t think I will ever use I pass along to others. I am trying to use my threads and other supplies. I hope to whittle my stash down so that I can buy thrifted clothes to use. I think that will be fun!

I save all my scrap fabric and make scrappy quilts! I absolutely love to upcycle and reuse fabric. Sewing hexie flowers is another way to use scraps.

I try to use my scraps in another project, and minimize what I actually toss.
