We’re thrilled to announce the start of the Tool Craze Blog Hop, a month-long event that celebrates the love of quilting and the use of tools to create beautiful, unique designs. We’ve teamed up with our friends at Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design, who have generously provided the 25 participating Island Batik Ambassadors with their tools. The challenge is to incorporate these tools and any coordinating Studio 180 Design‘s Technique Sheets into their quilts, using the new Island Batik collections. We can’t wait to see the amazing and creative designs that come out of this project!

Not only will the Tool Craze Blog Hop be a feast for the eyes, but there will also be three giveaways and six prizes up for grabs! These include bundles of new Island Batik collections, which will be featured during the hop.

Elita Sharpe (Busy Needle Quilting) is one of our new members this year! Elita is a longarm quilter and educator, currently dividing her time between Lawrenceburg, Indiana (US) and Geneva, Switzerland. She has been quilting for over 20 years, longarm quilting on an APQS Millennium for most of that time. Elita gives classes in the cosy setting of her home studio, on a variety of techniques, including longarm rentals, and hosts patchwork retreats in the French Alps. She also services sewing machines, both domestic and longarm!

Welcome to Island Batik Ambassador Storm at Sea Blog Hop!

A quilt made with the Storm at Sea block vividly depicts the rolling waves of a stormy sea. It is a slightly complex pattern that results in a wavy, secondary pattern in a quilt, even though there is no curved piecing. “Storm at sea” is a biblical block, one of several used first by quilters in America.

For this month’s Blog Hop we challenged the Ambassadors to play around with this old scriptual-based pattern and try different ways of changing the color palette to emphasize different elements within the design and create stunning stars or wavy lines. There are a number of ways of putting the blocks together, whether in rows of squares and rectangles that are then joined, or perhaps in block sections followed by a final thin row at the side and bottom. We’re excited to see what they come up with!

Our Ambassadors will be making their quilts with fabric from the latest Island Batik collections that will start shipping to your favorite quilt shops very soon! They will also be using products from our sponsors – Aurifil, Hobbs Batting and Schmetz Needles. We hope that you will follow along to see their amazing creations!
